    • yeah, that would make sense, since the freezing point of ice gets lower as its salinity rises, therefore it WOULD be colder when you freeze salt water.

Home Made Air Conditioning

Started by koichi · 10 months ago

It’s been pretty warm here, last couple of days. Today it’s supposed to hit 105 degrees Fahrenheit (that should be around 39 degrees Celsius?), and I don’t have an air conditioning (plus the sun blazes directly into my window). I have a fan, but al ... Continue reading »

  • Its actually pretty cold here now (which is unusual). Cold enough that I'm sick, although it doesn't take much to make me sick since I have a pretty bad immune system because I hate vitamin pills & juice.

I think having the hot air blowing at the ice will melt it quicker, and then it will start blowing freezing melted ice as you. I guess thats pretty cooling.
  • Texas cannot exist without the almighty air conditioner. Too much humidity and heat in my place. We just use a mixture of AC and fans. You can even use fans infront of AC's to have 'em blow out more colder air, and spread it faster.
  • I normally get to the lowest place in my house and hunker down. Heat rises, so if your house has multiple levels then it might be more comfortable to hang out on a lower floor.
  • I agree with JackTamaki. You should try lying on the floor with all the windows open. Also, you have a pool. Go swim!
  • I live on the 9th floor in a building so I often put towels or old clothes in cold water and hang them around the house, especially by the open windows (It's easy to create a draught at this hight).

    I also drink a lot.
  • Sleep on the floor. Not on carpet, but on wood or tile or marble.
  • I've been dying here the last couple of days! I live in an older building and my apartment doesn't have air conditioning or any proper means of ventilation. It's been hard to sleep because it's been so hot. I need to buy a fan to keep cool but since it's the northwest the weather's bound to change soon, right? LOL @ your homemade air conditioning, I think it'd be more effective if you just put the ice on you! I think I'm dehydrated...need to go get something cold to drink....
  • yep! Just switched to rain rain rain, and I'm lovin it. Thunderstorms last night, though, which was a bit strange. Still, so much nicer now. :)
  • I keep thinking I'm so glad I moved out of the South to the Northwest because of the weather in the NW is so much easier to deal with...then there come days where I start flashing back to living back in the South! Only now I don't have central AC and my friggin windows open up vertically!! We have 6 fans in my house two of which are industrial grade...

Just out of curiousity...did the bags of ice last long? Cause I tried some similar with ice in a pot and the ice melted within 10 minutes...
  • haha yeah, it was kind of lame. Only lasted around 15 minutes :(

NW is nice though, yeah? Glad you like it.
  • where do u live? i live in the desert and it gets up to 120 over here!
but its now usually 106 which isnt that hot but my friends are always crying about the heat im like w.e at least we sweat without running or anything haha

and 105 is like 40.5 Celsius
its not much of a difference though lol
  • http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodi... Best money investment ever. It's labeled as a fan, but the air it blows out is significant cooler than the surrounding air. I have the large unit in the living room, the smaller one on the computer desk. Made the past two summers bearable.
  • Yeah... that wouldn't cut it where I live. Just add to the humidity down here >.<
  • btw Kochi, i heard adding salt to ice can lower it's temperature and make it feel colder?
  • yeah, that would make sense, since the freezing point of ice gets lower as its salinity rises, therefore it WOULD be colder when you freeze salt water.
  • I usu just go to work and stay out of my house lol of course that might just be cause there's way to many ppl in my house hummmm wait what was the question again
  • buy a chiller as tall as yourself take out all the plastic/metal stuff that divides it then hop in! with a few jackets on don't count on ice in there! OR you can go to mc donalds and tell the sales clerk" i'll pay you $______ (the price depending on you) to put me in your mega sized freezer!"when he asks why you reply "it's freakin' hot out there and besides who doesn't wanna play with snow huh?"
  • this is such great information. thanks for the insight.
  • that is really a wacky idea hehehe
  • Wow.. nice idea.. That will be an effective way of cooling our self in summer..
